Christina is honoured with rotary award

Christina Stuart is the secretary and public relations organiser for the legion’s Normanton branch and she runs the Poppy Appeal, organised funerals for ex-servicemen and has recruited her son William as one of the legion’s standard bearers.

Mrs Stuart, who is known as Tina, also helps look after her husband and two disabled grown-up sons, and organises evening services, runs a car shuttle and fundraises for the Normanton Baptist Church, where she has attended since she was a child. Along with the Baptist Team, Mrs Stuart helps run a drop in centre on Tuesdays and Saturdays, offering cakes and coffee to help lonely and disadvantaged people in the community.

The community service award has been presented annually since 2002 - in memory of rotarian Bob Abson - to a local person judged to have made a significant contribution to the local area.

Mrs Stuart was presented with the accolade by Mr Abson’s son Stephen Abson, who said his dad would have been proud of her community service.

She also received a donation to a charity of her choice and a personal gift, which she asked to be added to her charity donation to the Royal British Legion.

The rotary club heard that Mrs Stuart had been chosen from a list of nine people nominated by rotarians, local organisations and members of the public.
