The woman had been getting ready to go on her night shift on Sunday evening when the two men smashed the front door of the home on Newland Street, Agbrigg, off its frame.

When she confronted them, they looked at her, apologised and fled, leading her to think it was a case of mistaken identity.

The 31-year-old, who does not want to be named, said: "I was petrified, I have not slept and every noise I hear and every car that goes past I'm looking out.

"I'm just worried they might come back. I've never been so scared in all my life."

She said she had been making food for work when she first heard the loud bang on her door at 7.25pm on Sunday.

"Then I heard another bang and someone shouted 'police'," she said.

"On the the third bang the door came about three-quarters of the way off its frame.

"There was a man dressed in a police uniform with a beanie hat on.

"I asked him what they were doing and he just said 'sorry' and ran off, so I chased him."

She saw the pair get into a dark-coloured Peugeot and was able to take down the registration plate, but the police have since told her it was cloned number.

The police have been since been to take samples of the footprints left on the front door from the kicks.

The resident added: "It must have been a case of mistaken identity, I don't understand what they would have wanted, they didn't attempt to take anything.

"As soon as they saw me, they ran.

"I'm not involved in drugs or anything like that, and there's nobody I know who would do something like this."

She says she is now looking to move out of the privately-rented property that she shared with a housemate.

Anyone with details is being asked to contact the police on 101 with the crime reference number 13210090143 from February 21.
