An elderly woman suffered serious head injuries when she was assaulted after Castleford Tigers’ last home game.

The 73-year-old victim was knocked to the ground by a man who barged into her.

He had just been involved in a clash with another man at a burger van on Wheldon Road on Friday at 10pm, shortly after the game with St Helens.

She banged her head during the fall and was helped by passers by before being taken to Pinderfields Hospital.

Detectives said the suspect then ran away into the crowd.

DC Fay Wroe of Wakefield CID, said: “This incident took place at a busy time when there were plenty of people around and will have been witnessed. I would ask anyone who saw the woman being pushed, the initial altercation, or who can help us identify the suspect to get in touch.”

The suspect was wearing a grey hooded top.
