Fireworks and bricks thrown at police trying to disperse gathering with around '500 people' in Castleford

Police were called to The Green at about 5.40pm on Friday, September 25 to reports about a large group of people gathering.

Approximately 100 people were present when police arrived but more people joined throughout the evening.

Officers said there were about 500 people present at one stage.

A police spokesman said that when officers arrived at The Green, they had bottles, fireworks and bricks thrown at them.

A vehicle was also set on fire.

Other criminal damage and anti-social driving incidents were also reported to the police.

The group was eventually dispersed by officers.

On Saturday, September 26, a 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Kingsman said: "Our priority remains the safety of the public and stopping the spread of coronavirus.

"This is a shared effort and we all need to play our part and adhere to the restrictions in place.

"We have been working with our colleagues in local authorities and public health to explain the dangers of the virus, but Friday night’s events go against all the hard work from our communities in attempting to stop the spread.

"While I can appreciate the sentiment of this particular gathering, it was illegal and a clear breach of coronavirus restrictions.

"Any violence towards our officers is also totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"I would urge people thinking about organising or attending events such as Friday night’s to seriously consider the impact of your actions.

"Not only are you putting yourself in danger, but also you are putting your family, friends, wider community and our officers at risk.

"You are also breaking the law and risk being fined and arrested."
