Four to stand trial over Wakefield housing estate shooting

Four men are to stand trial over a shooting on a Wakefield housing estate.

The four, who are all being held on remand, appeared at Leeds Crown Court this morning via video link from prison for a short hearing connected to a gun being fired towards a house in Lupset in August.

Billy Michael Bedford, 20, of Cedar Road Chickenley, Samuel Andrew Clegg, 23, of Edge Avenue, Thornhill, Anthony Richard Smithey, 26, of Cedar Drive, Chickenley and Dawson Wood, 19, of Gloucester Road, Wakefield, have all be charged with conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Smithey and Clegg appeared side by side over the link from HMP Leeds, with Bedford and Wood appearing from HMP Doncaster.

A new plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for October 16 so CCTV required for the case can be obtained.

A trial date has been set for March 1 next year, and is expected to last between five and seven days.

All four men are to remain on remand.

Police were called to Radcliffe Road, Lupset, in the early hours of Thursday, August 13 to reports that a firearm had been discharged at the door of a property.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Forensic teams were dispatched to the scene of the incident and an increased police presence was reported in the area in the hours that followed.
