Wakefield councillor Alex Kear to be sentenced for child sex offences

Alex Kear, 50, will appear at Leeds Crown Court having pleaded guilty to two charges involving a child under the age of 13 last month.

That may change today, however, depending on the punishment he receives.

Under legislation, councillors can only be removed from public office if they are sentenced for three months in prison or more.

Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper has led calls for a change in the law, which dates back to 1972.

Kear, of Stansfield Drive in Castleford, was elected as an independent for the Airedale and Ferry Fryston ward last year.

The former Labour party member's sentencing had been due to take place on Thursday this week, but the hearing was postponed by the court until today.
