Wakefield Armed Forces Day event cancelled but 2021 celebration will be 'bigger and better' than ever

Wakefield's annual Armed Forces Day event has been cancelled because of the coronavirus.

The event was scheduled to take place on June 27 this year, but with the government suggesting restrictions on public life could last month, it's been called off.

Wakefield Council, who organise it, said they were "deeply disappointed" to make the decision, but said it had been done in line with government advice.

They promised that 2021's Armed Forces would be "bigger and better" than ever before.

Councillor Sandra Pickin, the local authority's armed forces champion, said: "We understand that the cancellation of this event will be very disappointing for our residents, participants and stallholders but safety must come first.

"We must be responsible and follow the Government’s advice to protect the NHS and save lives.

"However, the focus now turns to next year and arranging a fantastic event for us all to show our support and gratitude for those who have served or are currently serving in the forces, and their families."
