Display called off after just four fireworks

A MAJOR Wakefield Council organised fireworks display attended by thousands of people was cancelled last night after just four fireworks were reportedly set off.

Fireworks were due to light up the sky above Thornes Park in Wakefield as crowds gathered for the city’s annual bonfire celebration.

The event started at 6pm last night (Saturday November 7) and the bonfire was due to be lit at 7pm followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm.

Twitter users reported seeing just four fireworks before spotting a tree on fire.

At 8.17pm last night, Wakefield Council tweeted: “Following advice from the firework company Thornes Park display has been cancelled as it was unsafe to continue. We sincerely apologise.”

Tony Wade tweeted: “@mywakefield fireworks in Thornes Park over after four fireworks due to wind apparently.”

Jess Dickinson tweeted: “So we came to Thornes Park to see fireworks. They lasted 30 seconds then a tree set on fire.”
