Elections 2015 - Selfies banned in booths

People will be going to the polls to chose the next government to run the country for the next five years.

A third of district councillors are also up for election, along with town and parish council candidates in some parts of the district.

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm tomorrow (Thursday, May 7) and The Electoral Commission has warned people against taking photographs in polling stations.

A spokesman for the commission said: “The law against releasing information obtained in a polling station is there to protect the integrity of the poll and the secrecy of the ballot.

“Remember that pictures of you before you go into or after you leave the polling station are great to use on social media posts but don’t take a picture of yourself inside the polling station as if you post this it could be a breach of the law.”

Joanne Roney, returning officer and chief executive of Wakefield Council,urged people to make their vote count.

She said: “We want to remind people to use their votes and have their say on who they want to represent them both in parliament, at Wakefield Council and in the town and parish councils.

“Don’t delay. Make sure your vote counts.”
