Wakefield residents to receive their free, new central heating boiler this month as the 'Big Boiler' scheme is rolled out

The council has been allocated £600,000 through the Government’s ‘Getting Building Fund’ to be able to provide qualifying residents who live in their own home with free replacement gas boilers and new gas central heating systems.

Upgrading to a new efficient gas boiler can typically save around £200 per year on fuel bills and can make homes warmer and healthier.

The scheme is part of the council’s commitment to support residents to live in warm and energy efficient homes and reduce the risk of fuel poverty.

All of the heating work will be done by the Council’s Better Homes Yorkshire approved contractor so it’s easy and hassle free to apply.

Mark Lynam, Corporate Director for Regeneration and Economic Growth, said: “We are very pleased that this fantastic service is supporting residents, many of whom will have been impacted by the pandemic.

The Getting Building Fund is investing, via Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), in shovel-ready infrastructure projects to create jobs and support economic recovery across the country.

There is a wide range of qualifying criteria, and it doesn’t rely on people claiming benefits, meaning many residents will be eligible so it’s worth enquiring to see if they qualify.

The scheme is available for a limited time only and there is still funding available so residents are urged to apply now to secure their free heating system.
