The council said precautionary gritting is carried out on A and B roads, commuter routes, steep main roads to villages, housing or industrial estates, including roads leading to main hospitals and large schools.

Gritting is carried out on 40 per cent of roads - roads used by more than 90 per cent of all the traffic in the district. On average, you are never more than 400 metres away from a treated route, the council said.
