The cinema, on Kirkgate, was once considered a local landmark, but has stood empty for more than 20 years.

Last year, it was purchased by Wakefield Council who said they were considering "all the exciting prospects" for the former cinema.

On Saturday, photos circulated online appearing to show fire crews tackling a blaze at the site.

And Wakefield Council has now confirmed that fire crews were called to the former ABC Cinema on Saturday evening.

Investigations into the cause of the fire, and any damage caused, are ongoing.

Kevin Fisher, Wakefield Council’s Service Director for Property, Facilities and Health and Safety, said: “We were informed by the fire service of a small fire at the ABC cinema over the weekend.

“We will be inspecting the building to ensure there isn’t any significant damage that needs addressing and working to further secure the building.”
