First statement from BT after fire at Hemsworth exchange knocks out phone and internet for residents

Investigations into a fire at a telecommunications exchange in Hemsworth are ongoing, BT has confirmed.

The exchange, off Westfield Road, Hemsworth, was badly damaged in a fire last night.

Fire crews from across the Wakefield district were called to help tackle the blaze, which engulfed 100 per cent of the building in flames, the fire service said.

A number of local residents have reported issues with their internet and phone services this morning, including Outwood Academy Hemsworth.

In its first statement since the fire, BT confirmed that the fire had left some homes and businesses without landline and broadband services.

Investigations into the blaze are ongoing, and BT has not yet been able to gain access to the building.

A BT Group spokesperson said: "Some homes and businesses in the Hemsworth area may be without landline and some broadband services after a fire at a local exchange last night.

"The fire service is carrying out investigations and we hope to gain access to the building once it's declared safe.

"Our Emergency Response Team is at the scene, coordinating our response. Mobile and fibre broadband services are not affected, and anyone needing to make a 999 call should use their mobile.”
