From New Faces to The Voice: Pamela impresses on BBC singing show

A Morley singing stalwart will appear on popular TV talent show The Voice.

Pamela Conway (nee Goodman) impresses in the ‘blind auditions’ section of the show, which airs tomorrow (Saturday) on BBC One at 7.15pm.

As part of duo Whett ‘n’ Wilde, Pamela and singing partner Rory Wilde perform a rendition of Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.

Pamela, 68, who now lives in Whitby, said: “I was in New Faces [TV talent show] in 1976 and I was second, but this has been absolutely amazing.”

But as Pamela was struck down by symptoms of post viral fatigue and rushed to hospital on the day of their audition, the pair’s chance to impress was nearly dashed.

After Rory vowed not to perform alone, the BBC allowed them to take to the stage on the very last day of auditions.

“I should have done it five days before – I was lucky to get that chance. We are chuffed to bits with the BBC,” said Pamela.

And Pamela’s mum Joyce Goodman, 90, who still lives in Morley, was at the studio to cheer her daughter on as part of the audience in September.

Joyce said: “It was great, I will be watching it tomorrow. I’m on the front part of the stage.

“I’ve watched her a lot because she’s worked all over the place and with all the stars. She worked with Frankie Vaughan on a summer season a long time ago.”

Pamela and Rory, 74, are not a couple but met 24 years ago in Spain and they describe each other as soulmates.

They currently perform in hotels all around the country but are based in Whitby and live five minutes apart from one another.

Rory describes himself as one of the pioneers of Rock ‘n’ Roll and has jammed with the greats, including The Beatles.

Pamela, who went to Victoria Road school in Morley, later performed at Batley Variety Club.

The celebrity judges on The Voice are Paloma Faith, Boy George, will.i.am and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson.
