Self-taught photographer Lee Ward, 35, started out capturing the city on a smart phone but his horizons changed when his wife bought him a more sophisticated camera.

Mr Ward, of Painthorpe, said: “I first started photography using my mobile phone on days out with my family and I thought they were great images, until my wife bought me my first digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera.

“The difference in image quality was unbelievable and from that moment I got the photography bug. I decided to teach myself by researching and watching tutorials. I spent hours learning all the different styles and techniques of shooting and processing images.”

His studies soon paid off. Mr Ward added: “I have been given some great opportunities covering a variety of photography from charity events in Wakefield, portraits, motorsports and many more. I have had my work shown on TV and magazines as a result of the opportunities. I find it highly motivational to receive feedback from people about my work, especially my shots of Wakefield. There are plenty of photogenic places like Newmillerdam, Sandal Castle, Pugneys, Navigation and the Hepworth gallery. I enjoy every aspect of what I do and would like to thank everyone that has helped me along the way.” To see more of Mr Ward’s photographs, visit www.facebook.com/LAWPHOTOGRAPHY2014.
