Olivia Shearon, 16, will go for the Miss Leeds’ crown in her mum’s Dynasty-style black and white spotted dress.

The 16-year-old Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy pupil has won a couple of heats to get this far and if she wins the regional final on Sunday she will qualify for the Miss England contest.

Mum Angela Shearon, 51, of Cow Lane, Havercroft, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for her. She’s a lovely girl and she’s got a lovely, bubbly personality.”

Olivia will cheered on by her mum, dad Phillip, 49, and sister Phillippa, 14 as she steps onto the stage at The Queens Hotel in Leeds.

She will have to wear three different outfits during the final: sports wear, a black cocktail dress and an ‘eco’ fashion outfit. The latter garment can either be a something bought from a charity shop or something handed down through the generations. It was this fashion requirement which had Mrs Shearon casting her mind back to her engagement outfit.

The mum-of-two said: “It is a cross over top with very high padded shoulders like they used to wear on Dynasty. We got the dress down from the loft. Olivia tried it on and it fitted her perfectly. She showed it to my husband and he said, ‘Wow! That’s your mum’s engagement outfit. Where are you going?’.

“Olivia said, ‘No, dad. This is my outfit for the pageant’. She’s extremely pleased with it and it brought back happy memories for me.”

As part of the competition Olivia has had to find sponsorship and raise funds. She has been sponsored by The Strand, a hair and beauty salon in Hemsworth. Olivia and her mum are also raising funds through a bake sale at school and at work this week ahead of the Miss Leeds final.

Mrs Shearon said: “There are 20 girls in the final and whoever wins has direct entry into the Miss England final.”

This Sunday’s final will be judged by the current Miss and Mr England and a columnist for Leeds City Guide. But there is also a public vote. You can vote for Olivia by texting MISS LEEDS15 to 63 333. Texts cost 50p but the money will go to a children’s charity.
