South Kirkby and South Elmsall councillor Laurie Harrison was due to take the chains of office but he lost his seat on Wakefield Council in last week’s district elections. Independent Wilf Benson was elected in his place.

Coun Pickin was already due to be the deputy mayor for 2014-15, a role that will now be taken by Featherstone councillor June Cliffe. Coun Pickin’s daughter, Samantha Buet, will be mayoress.

The formal mayor-making ceremony will take place at Wakefield County Hall on Wednesday, June 11.

Coun Pickin, who is the council’s armed forces champion, has chosen Families’ Activity Breaks (FAB) as the mayor’s charity. FAB provides fun and challenging activity holidays around the UK for bereaved military families.
