A police spokeswoman said one of the animals was hit and killed by a car at around 10.45pm.

She said it appeared that several other vehicles had then collided with that car, on the southbound carriageway, in what she described as “minor collisions”.

Three people were taken to Leeds General Infirmary but they have since been discharged.

Two lanes of the motorway had been closed today at 8am for cleaning and gritting but they had now reopened.
