Investigators sift through rubbish to find flytipping culprits

Council investigators are sifting through a tonne rubbish dumped at the former Westfield Hotel to find evidence of who the culprits were.

And they are warning anyone thinking of carrying out illegal flytipping that they could face fines of up to £50,000 after more reports of rubbish being dumped.

The council removed waste from the demolished hotel on Westfield Lane after nearby resident Dennis Parkin-Coates contacted the Express last week.

Evidence like household bills with addresses on them can be used to link the flytipping with those responsible.

Coun Maureen Cummings, cabinet member for environment and communities, said: “Over half a tonne of rubbish was removed from the Westfield Hotel site and we have been out there again this week to clear the remainder.

“Flytipping is serious criminal offence and has a real detrimental effect on the local community. We are now going through the rubbish to see if there is anything to indicate where it came from and who it belongs to.

Concrete, guttering and bricks have also been dumped around Musgrave Lane and South Hiendley Common.

Hemsworth councillor Sandra Pickin said: “I don’t know what possesses people to go and dump the waste in a green space where people walk. It is disgusting and it is getting worse.”

And a big clear up is due in Upton next week after mattresses, garden waste, bricks and household items were dumped at the bottom of Sheepwalk Lane.

Coun Martyn Ward, Upton and North Elmsall councillor, said: “It has got worse over the last few weeks and we are scratching our heads on how to deal with it. It really is an eye sore.”

Flytipping can be reported to Wakefield Council on 0345 8506 506.
