“People ask why I did a Krispy Kreme cake this time...it’s just as simple as I love doughnuts.
“I wasn’t expecting a gold award.
“As a baker you see your imperfections so I was really chuffed to bits.”
It was a double celebration for Mr Firth’s family as his girlfriend’s daughter Willow Gledhill also won a silver award in the competition with her Finding Nemo’s Dory themed cake.
Mr Firth, who used to work for Dobson’s making boiled sweets, has now been inspired to set up his own cake shop ‘Cake Castle’ in Town End, Ossett.
He hopes to open the store within the next week.
