Musician Bill Nelson takes his place on Wakefield’s walk of stars

Bill Nelson is presented with his Wakefield Star.

The guitarist and songwriter who fronted 1970s band Be-Bop Deluxe was presented with the Hollywood-style star during a ceremony at Unity Works.

A loud applause greeted the musician as he received his star on stage.

Mr Nelson, born in Westgate End, said: “It was a surprise more than anything but it makes me very proud.

“I have always kept in touch with Wakefield. I come through every weekend to visit my mum so it will always be very special to me.”

The star scheme was launched in 2010 to recognise the achievements of Wakefield’s individuals who excel in sport, culture, science, engineering and the contribution they make to the community.

Mr Nelson’s star will be placed on the city’s walk of fame alongside other famous local people this month.

They include sculptor Barbara Hepworth, writer Stan Barstow, rugby league legend Neil Fox and indie rock band The Cribs.
