New cycling and walking route will connect city and town

A new walking and cycling route could be built along a disused railway track near Castleford.

Transport charity Sustrans has applied to form the route from Green Row Bridge at Methley Junction to Castleford Greenway.

It would be the second phase of a project intended to connect Wakefield and Castleford for cyclists and walkers.

A statement submitted with the application read: “A key part of this route is a new bridge over the live Leeds to Castleford railway. This bridge is crucial in reaching the goal of linking Castleford and Wakefield by greenway.”

The plan forms part of the West Yorkshire cycling network City Connect scheme.

The proposal would be 730 metres from River Calder to the first section of the route in Castleford. In July 2016 a consultation was carried out as part of the City Connect cycling programme, 95 per cent of peope surveyed were in favour.
