The newly installed systems, which will be in place between junctions 25 and 30 later this year, will be tested from tomorrow until Sunday.

Tests will be carried in both directions between junction 27 and 28 during peak times until Sunday, May 19.

Drivers are advised to follow the signs and signals as speed limits will be subject to change to help the flow of traffic.

The tests follow four shorter tests carried out on Sunday mornings last month and if successful, this section is due to become operational from May 20.

David Pilsworth, Highways Agency project manager, said: “Although we have successfully tested the new technology on this section in off-peak periods, this will be the first time we will be operating the managed motorway under typical traffic conditions.

“By carrying out the tests over a longer period of time, and during peak hours, the operators at our regional control centre will be able to familiarise themselves more fully with the system in readiness for this section going fully live – which we expect to happen next week.

“This is a significant step forward in our work, and means that drivers will soon start to feel the benefits of extra capacity and reduced congestion on this section.”

The speed limit will remain at a maximum of 50mph for safety reasons – indicated by the overhead signs – until further sections of the new motorway become operational in early summer.

The motorway will open in a phased approach, with all work due to be completed by the autumn.
