Wakefield Council announced a £1.2m regeneration scheme for the South East of the district in March.

As part of the plans the new skate park will be built on land just off Main Street, opposite the Sun Inn pub.

District councillor Sandra Pickin said: “The skate park will be brilliant news for South Hiendley because there is nothing for youngsters to do.

“When we got the regeneration money we asked the children what they wanted and they told us a skate park so this idea has very much come from them.”

Coun Pickin said draft quotes for the scheme were currently being reviewed with work expected to start before the end of the year.

She said: “South Hiendley is the ideal place for something like this because the kids have been having to travel into Barnsley or Wakefield simply for something to do.

“The whole idea behind the £1.2m we’ve got is to spend it on projects that make a difference and this really will do that.”

Coun Denise Jeffery, the council’s cabinet member for economic growth and skills, said: “Regeneration continues to be priority for us as we drive forward investment in our district and I am pleased with all the projects outlined in this report.

“These plans will continue to support our long term goals to make the district a thriving hub of activity for everyone to enjoy.”
