Nisa shopkeeper helps local children

Josh Cordon, who runs three Nisa stores in Ryhill, Havercroft and Fitzwilliam, has bought 60 educational storybooks for local primary school children.

The Magic Mirror books have been handed out at Ryhill J&I School, Havercroft J&I School and Fitzwilliam Primary School.

Mr Cordon, who opened his first store ten years ago, said: “It’s important for the community as kids need to know these things.

“Underage drinking is a problem everywhere and these books will hopefully help educate the children about the dangers.

“So I decided to sponsor these books as it is good to help children be responsible before they go on to secondary school.”

The books and resources are published by the Police Community Clubs, an organisation set up by retired police officers to help educate and protect disadvantaged children. The ones sponsored by Mr Cordon are part of the Barney and Echo series, which follows the adventures of Barney Eagle and Echo the Squirrel in Treetop Forest.

Richard Evans, press officer for the Barney and Echo series, said: “The consequences of underage drinking and drugs can be devastating.

“These books are designed to broach difficult and confusing issues in a way young children can understand in a fun way.

It’s vital children are prepared properly before they go on to secondary school and it’s fantastic that Josh feels so strongly about this as to get involved and sponsor these resources for local children.”
