The council’s flagship STEP UP Programme launches its new website today (August 3) for residents and employers to access job opportunities, qualifications, career progression support and recruitment all in one place.

The STEP UP team helps people to find work, improve their skills or make a career change. The team will provide support to access training for those in work to improve their future job prospects and for employers to secure the skilled workforce they need for future growth and sustainability.

The new website has sections for residents regardless of age and at all stages of their career and also for employers, in order to protect, support and create jobs across the district.

Whether you are newly redundant or have been out of work for a while, the team can help you to find work by building an Action Plan which includes creating your CV, how to approach employers, dealing with interviews and matching to local jobs.

The STEP UP team also offers specialist support to young people between 15-25-years-old to find training or employment including access to apprenticeships through the Employment Hub.

Those looking to progress with their current employer or wanting a complete career change can also find help. STEP UP’s specialist ‘Skill Up’ advisers will support residents to increase skills and knowledge in their current sector, or gain new qualifications to move into a new career path.

Coun Darren Byford, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration said: “The new website offers a variety of help and support all in one place – from those looking to leave school and begin their working life, people who may for whatever reason find themselves out of work and also for those wanting to move up the career ladder.

“Step-Up has already supported hundreds of people across our district to find work or improve their skills and I urge you to take a look at what help is available, we have people who are willing to support you no matter what stage of life you are at.”

The new website also includes a section for employers, offering help with recruitment by advertising posts and providing a matching service for potential employees.

Step-Up can also make the process of redundancy a little easier by giving redundant workers the tools to get back into employment as soon as possible and it can also help to identify and source the right training for staff who wish to improve their skills and progress within your workplace.
