Sarah Cameron, a former junior European champion gymnast, suffered massive injuries, breaking almost all of her bones in the incident in Sheffield on Wednesday.

But her mum, Rachael, said her daughter would have been killed had it not been for her gymnastic ability.

She said: “There aren’t many bones in her body that aren’t broken. It’s going to be a good six months before she’s back to normal.

“I saw the whole thing, I couldn’t believe somebody could survive. They must have been doing a minimum of 60mph. She jumped out of the way of the first car and into the path of the second. They were just two crazy boy racers.

“They’re a menace and they need to get off the road before they kill somebody.

“She remembers being on the bonnet and then making sure she fell the right way. She wrapped herself up and got into the foetal position.

“The gymnastics saved her. She’s got really good reflexes.”

Sarah, a law student, broke her left leg, right hand, pelvis, collarbone, shoulder and vertebrae in her neck.

The 21-year-old was returning from shopping with her mum at Meadowhall.

Police said the hit and run happened at a crossing on Eccleshall Road at about 10pm close to the Marks and Spencers store.

They said two cars overtook stationery traffic at a red light when Miss Cameron was struck.

Both cars then sped off from the scene.

Miss Cameron was due to sit her final exam later this month, but now faces the prospect of graduating without her friends.

Anyone with any information about the incident should contact police on 101.
