A golden celebration for Eileen and Michael

The couple had to put their golden wedding plans on hold as a result of Covid-19.

They were due to celebrate their special day on a cruise around Japan to enjoy the cherry blossom season before travelling on to Brisbane, Australia to visit their younger son, Simon.

Their love of travel has taken them to 94 countries around the world and to six continents leaving only Antarctica which is on their bucket list! 

Eileen, now 73, grew up in Rothwell and Michael, in Crofton but they first met in July 1970 at an out-of-season dance at Sandal Rugby Club.

Both were in their second year of teaching, Eileen at Rothwell Primary School, where she had been a pupil, and Michael at the Junior School, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School.

Three months later they got engaged at Aysgarth Falls and still try to return there each year to remember that special day.

They were married on Easter Tuesday, April 13, 1971 by the Rev Francis Redhead at Holy Trinity Church, Rothwell. 

Eileen continued to teach until she took a career break in 1976 to have their two sons – Andrew in 1977 and Simon in 1980.

In 1981, Michael, now aged 72, was appointed deputy head at the junior school .

Eileen returned to teaching in 1986, at Wrenthorpe Primary School, where she continued to teach until she decided to retire from full-time work in 2003.

When not travelling they enjoy spending time with their three grandsons, eating out with friends, enjoying their garden, visiting the theatre and the ballet, walking and reading.

In September they hope to really celebrate their golden wedding with family and friends at Sandal Rugby Club.
