With little call for public telephones, many towns and villages have adopted their iconic boxes for a peppercorn price and made use of them.

However, there are still some with uncertain futures having not been adopted and these included the red boxes on Westgate in Wakefield opposite the Chamber of Commerce, one on Wood street opposite the old crown court building, Kingsway in Ossett and adjacent to the post box in Heath.

For just an adoption fee of £1, the community can then decide how to use them.

Many have turned them into ‘little libraries’ by storing books, others have used them to store life-saving defibrillator machines.

In Horbury, the box on Queens Street has been turned into an art gallery.

A spokeswoman for BT said: “Thousands of communities have already come up with a fantastic array of ideas to re-use their beloved local phone box.”
