John said: "Oliver said to me 'daddy, we have to get the bin out of the pond or the ducks will die.'

"So, we got found some long sticks and managed to get the bin out.

"Oliver then picked up the bin and moved it away from the pond."

Proud John contacted Wakefield Council about the incident and they in turn passed on the details to the Parks and Recreation team.

"They asked to meet Oliver and gave him some gifts. They also took photos for their internal magazine. We're so very proud of him."

Glynn Humphries, Wakefield Council’s Corporate Director for Communities, Environment and Climate Change, said: “We would like say a big thank you once again to Oliver and his dad for helping to look after and protect our local environment.

“It was lovely to be able to present Oliver with a certificate to recognise his actions and he should be extremely proud of his concern and care for our local wildlife. I hope many more people can follow in his footsteps.”

Wakefield Council would also like to issue a fresh warning about the dangers of open water.

Any incidents should be reported to the council. Visit their website here.
