Rustics Arms pub in Ackworth set to close down

Rustic Arms landlord Antony Lunn will close for the final time on Monday amid claims pub company Stonegate has failed to address major problems with the building.

Mr Lunn and partner Jonny Cording have run the Rustics in Ackworth for eight years and say they have transformed it into a successful business turning over more than £1.5m a year.

But the couple are selling everything they own in the building - including TVs, mirrors and furniture - and are closing the Rustics down on Monday (Aug 31).

Mr Lunn said he is having to make 40 full and part time staff redundant.

He said the building has major electrical and structural problems and claims pub company Stonegate has failed to carry out essential repair work.

Stonegate say they have provided access to an alternative energy supply and have offered support in property repairs, but have not been given access to the site.

Mr Lunn, of Pontefract, said there are problems with leaks and said the building needs a new roof.

Mr Lunn said Stonegate has also refused to address electrical problems, adding: "Our main fuse has blown seven times this year and every time that happens we have to wait for National Grid to come out."

Mr Lunn said there are "massive damp problems" and said the flat at the pub is uninhabitable due to damp.

He added: "We had 1,300 people in the garden for the football (world cup). It is the place to be in the summer.

"It's heart breaking . We wouldn't leave if the building was suitable for what we need it for."

He added: "We turned over at least £1.5m for the last four years. That's incredible numbers for a village pub."

Mr Lunn claims Stonegate have ignored his communications for three months and did not acknowledge his notice to leave.

Rustics regular customer Christine Dixon said: "I will be sad to see it go. It is just very friendly and welcoming."

Customer Emma Wood said: "I come in here every night without fail.

"This pub has changed so much since they took over eight years ago. They have made it a nice place to come.

"It's family friendly, dog friendly. Ant and Jonny make this pub."

A spokesperson for Stonegate, said: "We have consistently worked to engage with and support the publican at the Rustic Arms, including providing access to alternative energy supply and offering support in property repairs, however have not been provided site access or engagement to undertake these.

"Stonegate remains committed to supporting the long-term future of the Rustic Arms and will continue to work constructively towards a positive outcome for the pub and its local community.”
