Smoking shelter plan following assaults on Arriva bus drivers

Bus firm Arriva is wanting to build a smoking shelter for drivers at the station in Wakefield following incidents of assault when they refuse to hand over cigarettes.

The company say there have been a number of angry confrontations with drivers at the station entrance when approached for cigarettes.

The company is also applying to install a barrier at the Marsh Way entrance to stop vehicles U-turning.

A spokesperson for Arriva said: "Our priority is to provide safe and respectful environments for our staff to work in at all times, including when they may be working in busy areas with general public also present.
