Sugar Rush Sweeties could be heading to Wakefield after couple gets a taste of success in lockdown

Young entrepreneurs Harry Lynch and Tayla Harris are planning to expand into Wakefield after having a taste of success during lockdown.

The couple, who are both 22, were planning to travel the world last year when COVID-19 put a stop to their dream. One year later their business, Sugar Rush Sweeties, is the biggest counter and online seller of sweets in Yorkshire. Sugar Rush started in October 2019 when the couple, who were working full time in banking and teaching, decided they needed some extra cash for their travel plans.

Tayla said: “I’d seen a company on Instagram based down south delivering pizza boxes of sweets and thought it was a great idea. Harry and I went to Costco and bought £100 of sweets, set up an Instagram account and launched Sugar Rush Sweeties. The demand was almost instant, and within weeks we were delivering over 50 boxes of sweetie boxes a week on evenings and weekends.”

The couple ploughed their profits into their online business, offering local deliveries and a postal service. When Covid-19 hit the UK, sales increased by more than 90 per cent. They gave up their careers to open a unit in Garforth in the summer. By the third lockdown, they were selling more than 100 different sweets, desserts and milkshakes, had launched a click and collect counter, and are hoping to open a second base in Wakefield if they can find a suitable location.

Harry added: “As soon as we opened the doors of Sugar Rush Sweeties, we had people queuing down the street to buy them, and ever since the demand has just been phenomenal. We now employ a total of five staff. The ultimate goal is to have a nationwide chain of sweet shops as well as an online presence, with a system in place to run the business remotely while we travel the world.”
