Tenant eviction ban extended for further two months

Housing secretary Robert Jenrick has announced a two-month extension to the government's ban on evicting renters during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government has extended its ban on evictions in England and Wales of tenants in both social and privately rented accommodation until August 23.

"Eviction hearings will not be heard in courts until the end of August, and no one will be evicted from their homes this summer due to coronavirus." the housing secretary, Robert Jenrick tweeted.

The government's original eviction moratorium, announced in March, was due to end on June 25 allowing landlords to institute legal proceedings to remove tenants.

The extension will now protect tenants and eviction proceedings will not be able to start until the end of August.
