UNISON general secretary to join striking workers on Coal Mining Museum picket line

Workers at the National Coal Mining Museum who have been on strike for over three months in a dispute over pay are to be joined on the picket line by the general secretary of UNISON.

More than 40 members of staff walked out in mid-August and have been on strike ever since.

The workers are striking for a fair wage rise. A pay offer made two days before the start of the walkout began was rejected because, the union says, the terms were ‘worse than previously discussed’.

It said that during the industrial action, museum bosses put forward another offer which would have left several staff members ‘earning less than the offer’ they turned down in August. This has also been rejected.

UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea will join the picket line on Thursday, November 20, where she will meet the workers taking industrial action, many of whom were part of the year-long miners’ strike 40 years ago.
