The Dutch pop group were due to play on the Bank Holiday weekend, supported by numerous other local acts and with thousands of fans expected to attend.

Despite lockdown restrictions slowly being lifted, the event remained in jeopardy because of social distancing problems for large events.

And organisers Hemsworth Town Council has confirmed this week that the gig will now be moved to the Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May, 2021.

Hemsworth councillor, Jim Kenyon, said: “It’s been approved and all members are now up to speed with it all.

“The Vengaboys have agreed to honour the agreement and will now play May 31.

“It’s costing us no extra and the deposits still stand.

“I think everybody is happy with the way it has worked out, there was no way we could have gone ahead with it this year.”

The Vengaboys had seven top-10 hits in the late 1990s, including two number ones and have sold 25 million records worldwide.

They had pencilled in West Yorkshire as part of a European tour for this year. Many of the shows have since been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Hemsworth Town Council secured the group at a knock-down price because they were already performing at venues in Britain.

The event at Hemsworth in August was due to have a number of tribute support acts, including Meatloaf, Queen, Cher and Pink.

Coun Kenyon said he would be happy if they could attract a crowd of around 5,000 for the event, with tickets priced at £30 each and £15 for children.

As a gesture of good will over the date switch, those who have already bought a ticket will be entitled to a meal and drinks voucher on the day for the re-scheduled gig.

For those with tickets who are unable to make next year’s gig, they can expect a full refund if required.
