Wakefield Christmas Hamper Appeal delivers parcels to families

Deliveries of our Christmas hampers to families across the Wakefield district are now nearly complete.

This year’s appeal has been remarkably successful, despite the pandemic and all of the problems arising from lockdown and social distancing requirements.

The Rotary Club of Wakefield Chantry, The Community Awareness Programme (CAP) and the Wakefield Express have again worked together to help families in need.

With the help of Express readers and friends of Rotary and CAP, nearly 600 hampers have been collected and delivered.

This week, Gemma Jimmison, from the Express, kindly agreed to present one of the last hampers to a family in Normanton.

Lee and Leanne, and their three children, Daniel, Ben and Joshua, were the family that Gemma handed the parcel over to.

Leanne told the Express: “We are really grateful to the Rotary Club and CAP for all of their efforts in making this possible. So we would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who contributed and made this possible. Our Christmas will definitely be much better because of this kind donation.”

Also at the presentation were Jade Francis, from the Children First organisation which coordinated most of the final distribution to individual families, and Kevin Dobson, from CAP.

By now, all the hampers going to the families nominated by Children First will have been delivered while some are still on their way to families from the other distribution centres being used this year. This includes the Portobello Community project, being run by Sarah Cutts, and those being distributed by the Baptist Church at Belle Isle, being run by Kezia Robinson.
