Wakefield road closures: The roads to avoid over Christmas and the New Year

And six of them are expected to cause moderate delays – with drivers facing waits of between 10 and 30 minutes.

The latest expected works list, with notes from National Highways, shows that six closures already in place are expected to carry on this week:

• M62, until 6am December 31 2025, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M62 eastbound and westbound, junction 29, carriageway and lane closures for bridge works, diversion route via national highways network.

• M1, until 6am January 10 2026, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M62 eastbound and westbound, junction 28 to junction 31 and M1 northbound and southbound, junction 40 to junction 44. M621 clockwise, junction 7, carriageway and lane closures for parapet replacement works, diversion in place M62 M1 A653.

• M1, until 6am January 16 2026, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M1 northbound and southbound, junction 37 to junction 40, carriageway and lane closures for carriageway improvement works.

• A1, until 6am March 1 2026, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): A1 northbound and southbound, Barnsdale bar to Ferrybridge, carriageway closure and lane closures for structure works, diversion route in place via local authority network.

And a further seven closures will begin over the next two weeks:

• M1, from 8pm December 22 to 5am December 23, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M1 northbound and southbound, junction 38, Lane closure for technology works.

• M1, from 8pm December 23 to 6am December 24, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M1 northbound, junction 39, Lane closure for technology works.

• M1, from 9pm December 23 to 6am December 24, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M1 southbound, junction 40 to junction 39, Lane closures for barrier repair works.

• M1, from 8pm January 3 to 9am January 4, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M1 northbound and southbound, junction 37 to junction 38, Lane closure for barrier repairs.

• M1, from 8pm January 5 to 6am January 7, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M62 eastbound and westbound, junction 29 to junction 30, carriageway and lane closures for inspection/survey, diversion via M62 and M1.

• A1(M), from 9pm January 5 to 5am January 11, slight delays (under 10 minutes): A1M northbound, junction 37 to junction 38, Lane closure for general cleaning and maintenance.

• M1, from 9pm January 5 to 5am January 6, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M1 northbound, junction 41, slip road and lane closure for barrier/fence safety repairs, diversion via M1 and A638.

National Highways is responsible for maintaining motorways and major A-roads, so closures of smaller roads will not be included in their schedule.
