Sarah set herself a challenge to start running 10k a day throughout May in memory of her mum who received end of life care at the hospice in 2015.

Five years on and she is still annually dedicating the month of May to running 10k each day for the charity that made her mum so comfortable in her final days.

The Pride of Britain Awards began 21 years ago as a way to celebrate the achievements of truly remarkable people who make the world a better place. Screened on ITV and with an audience of around five million viewers each year, it is the biggest awards show of its kind on British television.

Sarah said: “I’m still pretty overwhelmed, to be honest. It feels a bit surreal. Wakefield Hospice has such a special place in my heart because my mum received end of life care there. I was blown away by the care she received and by just how lovely the hospice itself is. Wakefield Hospice is such an incredible charity and all donations are so gratefully received by them. We just need to keep them on the map so people continue to support them.”

Director of Income Generation at Wakefield Hospice, Helen Knowles, said: “We’re so excited for Sarah and she is such a worthy winner. I know her mum would be incredibly proud as is everyone here at the hospice.

“It means the world to us, and enables us to continue providing vital end of life care to the community.

“We have everything crossed for Sarah and we hope she gets the recognition she deserves. We urge everyone to vote!”

Each shortlisted nominee will be interviewed by ITV for a short documentary, which will be aired on Calendar from September 28, with details on how people can vote for the person they would like to represent their region. The winner will be announced on Friday October 2 and attend the virtual award finals ceremony.
