Plans are in for 300 new homes as part of multi-million pound development

An artists impression of what a redeveloped canalside could look like as part of the City Fields scheme.

Stretton Estates Wakefield Ltd has submitted a planning application to create 334 homes at the site of the former Wakefield B Power Station.

The new housing estate will make up part of the multi-million pound development, which will create new homes and leisure, retail and commercial space to the East of the city centre.

Planning documents submitted to Wakefield Council read: “This proposal for Heathlands at City Fields aims to create a high quality development which reflects the unique character of the area.

“The intention is to create a vibrant and desirable residential development.”

The estate will be accessed by the new £33m Eastern Relief Road, also being built as part of the masterplan.

Neil Rodgers, the council’s service director for planning, transportation and highways, said: “I can confirm we have received an application for over 300 new homes within the City Fields development.

“It will be considered in the same way as any other application and in due course will be looked at by council’s planning committee.”

The City Fields development will see the construction of 2,500 new homes as well as a primary school, health facilities and parkland.

The site will also include a new 2km landscaped waterfront area with canalside walks, cafes, restaurants, bars and shops.

It will create 3,200 job opportunities.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for economic skills and growth, said: “The City Fields development is an exciting scheme which is supporting the regeneration of our district.

“Once completed, it will create hundreds of new homes, new businesses premises, retail and leisure facilities, which all form part of the master plan for the area.

“City Fields will also support our overall vision for the district, to be recognised as a great place to work, live and do business.”

Housebuilder Miller Homes has begun work to construct the first new houses as part of the scheme’s initial phase.

And the 5.5km Eastern Relief Road, which will provide a link from Aberford Road to Doncaster Road, is also under construction.
