The panic-stricken homeowner rang the the emergency services to ask them to attend their Pontefract-area property to deal with the slippery reptile.

The police said: "Due to the nature of the call one of our officers attended at the nearby property to make enquiries.

"The snake was located, and it did look very convincing, however, it later transpired after the fire brigade had attended and scaled the roof that in actual fact, it was a toy snake.

The toy snake looked real, insisted police.

"It is thought that the snake perhaps ended up on the roof as it had possibly been taken by a bird of prey mistaking it for a real one but dropped it as it didn’t taste that nice."
