Clarification over two hours' free parking in Wakefield

A scheme to offer drivers in Wakefield two hours' free parking has not yet been confirmed.

The local authority is considering bringing in the perk later this year, but it is subject to a public consultation, which is due to start next month.

A total of £1.8m has been set aside for the scheme in the forthcoming budget, if the idea is approved.

Speaking last week, council leader Denise Jeffery said she thought the scheme was the best way forward and that the authority was hoping to keep it in place "over the next few years", if it gets the green light.

"I think two hours is just enough for people to get their hair done, get their shopping done and I think it will work for businesses," she said.

"It's not just in Wakefield city centre, it's right across the district. We want to make sure we improve all of our towns."

Parking across Wakefield remains free of charge in council-run car parks until the end of March.

Earlier this week it was reported by the Local Democracy Service that the scheme had been approved but Wakefield Council has said that is not the case.
