The popular leisure facility at Thornes Park in Wakefield was seriously damaged in a suspected arson attack in February this year.

Cash for immediate repairs to the building was set aside last month, and the local council, which runs the site, is now developing ideas for how a replacement stadium would look.

The popular site is used by several local groups, including Wakefield Harriers.

Even parts of the building unaffected by the fire are said to be showing their age, with the stadium having been first put up in 1991.

Under proposals, the rebuilt facility would have an artificial 3G sports pitch, alongside a new six lane track, a fitness studio, gym and cafe.

Members of the public are invited to have their say on the ideas and can fill in a survey about it here https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/tps2020consultation.

The final plans will be subject to planning permission.

Coun Jacquie Speight, portfolio holder for leisure and sport, said: "We want to provide opportunities for everyone in Wakefield to be active and to help achieve this, it’s important that new leisure facilities meet the needs of the people both now and into the future.

"It is very important that we hear the views of residents as we begin to make plans, and develop a facility that is not only fit for the future but has also been shaped by current and future users. So I urge people to get involved and take part in the consultation."
