While refuse and recycling continued at the start of lockdown, the collections of grass clippings were suspended for staff to be re-deployed to other services.

The recycling centres have since re-opened where garden waste can be taken, but huge queues into the tips are putting many off while others do not have the transport to reach the sites.

Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Like nearly every organisation, our workforce has been affected by the coronavirus so we've had to manage with less staff and reprioritise to protect key services.

"We suspended garden and bulky waste collections so that staff could be redeployed to the other higher priority waste collections.

"We fully understand residents’ frustrations and we are working really hard to ensure that the garden waste collection service is up and running again as soon as possible.

“I would like to thank everyone for the patience and support they have shown us during this pandemic.

“Our Household Waste Recycling Centres are now open should residents need to get rid of excess waste.”
