Voters across Wakefield district head to polls for 2021 local elections

The first voters have headed to polling stations across the Wakefield district this morning, to have their say in the local elections.

Twenty-two of Wakefield Council's 63 seats are being contested after weeks of campaigning by the parties.

Voters are also choosing the first ever elected mayor of West Yorkshire, a role which is being merged with that of the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Polling stations opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm.

Voters are being advised to wear a mask and to bring their own pen or pencil to cross their ballot papers.

Local elections are taking place across the UK today, most of which were delayed from last year because of the Covid pandemic.
