Wakefield's Thornes Park Athletics stadium is set to close for almost a week to hose the counting of the district's local election votes.

The stadium is used to host the counting of the district's local and general election votes, and will this year include votes cast in the first West Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayoral election.

Social distancing restrictions mean the count is expected to take place over several days.

As a result, Thornes Park Athletics Stadium will be closed from 8.30pm on Tuesday, May 4 to 12pm on Monday, May 10.

People are asked to make use of Aspire services at other council gyms while the closure is in place.

Parking at the stadium will also be restricted during this time. The closure will be supervised by security staff and entry to the car park will be by permit only.

Alternative parking facilities are available off Thornes Road next to the duck pond or Denby Dale Road, off the roundabout.

The count is not open to members of the public.

Last year, concerns were raised that the stadium would not be able to host the election count after it was badly damaged in a fire, but it has since been restored.
