This is why Wakefield Town Hall will be lit purple this evening

The city's town hall will join thousands of other landmarks and buildings across the world in flooding with purple light in support of United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ Purple Light Up Day.

The #PurpleLightUp movement is run by Purple Space with the support of disability charity Scope, and celebrates the economic contribution of the 386 million disabled employees around the world.

Councillor Michael Graham, Cabinet Member for Resources said: “We are delighted to be able to support - having been contacted by our local Scope charity shop – and help to mark this important event by lighting up the Town Hall in purple in the evening.

“We aim to be an inclusive employer and we welcome this day for shinning a spotlight on the contribution made by millions of disabled employees across the world.”

To mark the international day there will be a digital 24-hour global broadcast about disability employment taking place in six continents, highlighting issues including driving cultural change in the workplace, technology and accessibility, recruitment and retention.

Since 2017 #PurpleLightUp has been driving momentum for disability inclusion across hundreds of organisations, reaching thousands of employees in different ways. This includes lighting up iconic buildings purple, holding events, developing workplace policies for disabled employees and sparking conversations about disability inclusion worldwide.
