£150k bid to improve transport links in Normanton

Plans for a £150,000 scheme to improve transport facilities and change the road layout in Normanton town centre have been announced.

Wakefield Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority hope to make the town into a public transport hub with improved signage and changes to road layouts in the town.

Bus shelters will also be replaced throughout the town centre as part of the scheme.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “This sche offers a real opportunity for Normanton and will bring big improvements to the town.

“It will make the railway station more visible, make it easier for pedestrians to get into the station and make bus shelters more modern and comfortable.”

The proposals also include a new Metro sign for passenger information about the railway station, improvements to the footpath on Lower Station Road and a zebra crossing on Market Street will also be upgraded.

As part of the project, the current one-way system between Market Street and Talbot Street to improve access to the railway station.

A public exhibition showing the plans is being held at Normanton Library from today (Friday, June 12) until Saturday, June 20.

Coun Dagger said: “I hope people will welcome the scheme and come to the library to see the exhibition and let us know what they think about the plans.”

A member of the project team will be at the Market Street library on Thursday, June 18 from 9.30am until 5.30pm.

Coun Peter Box, chairman of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: “This project will provide improved transport facilities for the town and will be a focal point for public transport journeys.

“I encourage people to attend the exhibitions to see the plans and have their say.”

If approved, the works are expected to be completed by March 2016.
