Pub of the week - The Bingley Arms

Take The Bingley Arms at Horbury Bridge for example.

It is bounded by the River Calder on one side and by the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal on the other.

On a sunny day the pub is a magnet for people who just want to idle away an hour or two with a pint by the water.

The grade II listed Georgian pub has been run for the past 11 years by husband and wife team Richard and Sarah-Gayle Tripp.

Landlord Richard said: “It’s got a great situation. We have the canal on one side and the River Calder on the other side. We get walkers, cyclists, fishermen and boaters. We have a very rich and very varied clientele.”

Beer drinkers have the choice of five regular beers and one guest ale.

Abbeydale Moonshine, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, Theakston’s Old Peculier, Roosters Yankee and Tetley’s are all on permanently.

Richard added: “The beers are all very popular. They are all, apart from the Tetley’s, from relatively local breweries. When I can, I like to get Yorkshire beers. At the moment we have beers from Ossett, Knaresborough, Sheffield and Masham.”

And another county ale, York’s Guzzler, was due to go on the guest pump when the Express called for a chat.

Richard said: “The pub is divided up into two rooms, with three open fires in winter. People love the interior, it’s traditional.”

The building is also steeped in history.

Richard added: “It’s a Grade II listed Georgian building. It was built in 1822 by the Lane Fox family. Their ancestral home is Bramham where they hold the horse trials. It was built the same year that Tetley’s founded their brewery.”

An obvious feature of the pub is the slope in the lounge.

Richard added: “The building actually leans towards the river. There is a gradient towards it. So you do have a walking downhill feeling when you walk around.”

The interesting location extends to the pub’s beer garden, which has just won Punch Tavern’s regional garden award.

There is a garden to the front and the rear, plus extensive canal side seating.

So if you fancy a stroll by the water why not call in to The Bingley Arms which makes the perfect stopping off point.

You could also prolong your stay with roast lunch on Sundays or a bar meal on Fridays and Saturday lunchtimes. There is nothing quite like a beer with a view. The Bingley Arms is based on Bridge Road, Horbury Bridge.

The pub is open 4pm to 11pm Monday to Thursday and noon until midnight Friday to Sunday.

Bar meals are available from noon until 2pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday lunch is served from noon until 4pm on Sundays.

The pub is run by Richard and Sarah-Gayle Tripp.

Expect five regular ales and one guest ale. Permanent beers from Abbeydale, Theakston’s, Tetley’s, Ossett and Roosters.
