Remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice

Now, 98 years after Private Hubert Dennison Acomb from South Elmsall was killed during the First World War, people are being asked to remember him as part of the Royal British Legion’s Every Man Remembered campaign.

Pte Acomb died on September 26, 1916, aged 18.

Dr Stephen Clarke, head of remembrance at the Royal British Legion, said: “A century on from Pte Hubert Dennison Acomb’s death, we’re urging people to visit the Every Man Remembered website and write a public thank you for Hubert and others who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.

“Through the site you can look up a family member, namesake, or search for someone from your town – the important thing is that not a single one of them is left without a message of remembrance for the role they played during the First World War.

“The support the Legion provides is just as important for our armed forces today as it was when the charity was founded after the First World War. Every Man Remembered will help us make a real connection to those who died 100 years ago and support those who continue to serve.”
